International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), asked Monday Egyptian authorities to immediately drop charges against prominent figures within Syndicate of Journalists, Al Bawaba News reported. Security forces arrested Sunday three prominent figures within syndicate, including syndicate's head Yahya Qalash on charges of harboring individuals wanted by security forces. IFJ issued a statement, declaring its solidarity with all three journalists, saying that these charges against the journalists are horrible and should be dropped immediately, stressing that fabricating cases against defenders of freedom and sending them to prison can happen only in repressive countries. All three journalists, including Qalash refused to pay the bail, which was set by the public prosecutor for their release. As such, security forces fear potential protests on the detention of Qalash by journalists, so they opted to close down all roads leading to the syndicate's headquarters in Cairo. The syndicate's headquarters was the gathering place for protests against the ministry of interior, after security forces stormed the syndicate's headquarters in last month. However, dozens of journalists have flocked to Qasr al-Nil police station, to declare their solidarity with Qalash.
