What does the tourist share with King Ramses, asks Sherif Sonbol * Our dear sports editor Inas Mazhar was appointed a member of the 96-strong jury assigned by France Football magazine to select the footballer of the year, who will win the 52nd Ballon d'Or. Mazhar, the Egyptian representative, is the only female member of the jury; by 12 November, each member will have submitted five names and the winner will be announced on 4 December. After the FIFA Award, the Ballon d'Or is the most coveted honour of its kind. *Al-Ahram Weekly 's cultural columnist Mursi Saad El-Din inaugurated an exhibition of the work of Hassan Rashed at the Grant Gallery. Rashed is best known for folklore-inspired paintings and has won national and international awards. His work is in collections in America, France, Germany and Holland and, of course, on show at art museums in Egypt. Present were director of the gallery Fadia Grant and head of the Fine Arts Sector Mohsen Shaalan. In collaboration with the American University in Cairo (AUC), the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt (BCFE) took part in the Cure Festival on breast cancer last Friday. The event aimed at raising donations for breast cancer patients in the framework of the BCFE's wider programme. Present were a group of public figures, officials and celebrities including Qalioubiya Governor Adli Hussein, AUC President David Arnold, Dean of Banha University's Medicine Faculty Mohsen Khayri, actress Maha Abu Ouf, singer Haytham Said as well as radio and TV announcer Osama Mounir. Marwan Saada 's band Helwa Ya Baladi and West Al-Balad gave performances, while Arnold seized the opportunity to thank BCFE Chairperson Dr Mohamed Shaalan for his efforts in raising awareness among AUC students. * Our dear colleague artist Said Badawi has published a series of children's books by Al-Zahraa Publishing House. Entitled Tasali Wa Alwan (Fun and Colours), Badawi 's books demonstrate the simplicity of his style and his ability to help a child discover his own talent step by step, offering not only colouring opportunities but puzzles and games. Badawi who has published a number of caricatures in the daily Al-Ahram was a student of the late Salah Jahin. * To celebrate the National Day of Angola, Angolan singer and marimba specialist Té Macedo is giving a concert at the Cairo Opera House Small Hall on 9 November. Macedo was born in 1970 in Luanda where she began her musical studies at the Music Academy. She has studied piano and classical dance and has taken classical guitar and clarinet lessons with Angolan teachers Manuel Chimbandongo and Cuban Juan Lorenzo. * The Mena House Oberoi's pool garden saw one of its biggest gatherings as hundreds of high-profile figures from different sectors attended the lavish wedding party of Sherif and the gorgeous Karima. The groom is but the son of Zahi Hawass, Al-Ahram Weekly 's very own columnist, world-renowned archaeologist and secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The party was crowned by the presence of Culture Minister Farouk Hosni, Minister of Aviation Ahmed Shafiq, Minister of International Cooperation Fayza Abul-Naga, Minister of Social Solidarity Ali Moseilhy, Qalioubiya Governor Adli Hussein, former foreign minister Ali Maher in addition to the US Ambassador to Egypt Francis J Ricciardone. Present at the wedding party as well was a galaxy of stars including the ever world famous Omar Sharif, actresses Youssra, Laila Elwi, actors Mamdouh Abdel-Alim, Osama Abbas, filmmaker Inas El-Degheidi and singer Mohamed Mounir. From the media sector, present were Al-Ahram Editor-in-Chief Osama Saraya, Al-Ahram writers Khayri Ramadan, Mona Ragab and head of the Arab Publishers Union Ibrahim El-Moalim. Chairman of the Board of Al-Ahram and Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram Al-Masaai Mursi Atallah presided over the launch of the Arab-European Dialogue Initiative for Environmental Awareness at Al-Ahram grand hall.
