Salah is back with a bang
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 16 - 08 - 2018

All eyes were on Liverpool and Mohamed Salah in particular as the club kick-started their Premier League season when they faced West Ham United at home on Sunday. The pressure was on Liverpool for two reasons: they spent a lot to strengthen their squad during the summer and second, all their main rivals that played before them won their games. In addition, apart from the pressure on Liverpool, there was extra pressure on the Egyptian superstar Salah as people will want to know if he will be a one-season wonder or continue to dominate and break records in the biggest and strongest league in the world.
In the end Liverpool dominated West Ham 4-0. Salah needed only 19 minutes to let everyone know he could be headed for another breathtaking season as he opened his account with a tap-in from Andy Robertson's inviting cross. The goal surely gave Salah the boost he needs to go on and have another astonishing season and help Liverpool land a piece of silverware after last season's heartbreak in the final of the Champions League when they lost to Real Madrid 3-1 in a game that Salah will want to forget as quickly as possible after leaving the field very early when Sergio Ramos sent him hurtling to the ground, injuring his shoulder.
Liverpool managed to add three more goals thanks to a brace from Sadio Mane and a later strike from the in-form Daniel Sturridge.
A huge win and a clean sheet is exactly what Jurgen Klopp's men needed to lay down the marker and announce themselves as real contenders to win the league this season. Salah came close to adding a second goal for himself on a couple of occasions but Lukasz Fabianski denied him both times to leave him with one goal from his first 87 minutes of the season. Sturridge replaced Salah with three minutes remaining.
Next for Salah and Liverpool will be a tough Crystal Palace game away from home after the Londoners managed to defeat newcomers Fulham 2-0 away from home in their opening game of the season.
Still in England, Ramadan Sobhi was an unused substitute as his new side Huddersfield lost 3-0 at the hands of Chelsea at home. Next for Huddersfield is another terrifying fixture as they face Man City away from home in what is expected to be a routine win for the home side.
Mohamed Al-Nenni was another unused substitute as Arsenal lost to Man City 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium as the champions dominated from the very first minute to the last second of the game.
In the championship, Ahmed Hegazi registered an assist as West Brom defeated Norwich City 4-3 in a thrilling game that witnessed poor defending from both teams. Hegazi assisted in the fourth goal that turned out to be the winning strike for his side that now have four points from their first three games.
Egyptian World Cup players Ahmed Al-Mohamadi and Sam Morsi came up against each other as Aston Villa hosted newcomers Wigan at Villa Park. This was another hugely entertaining game that Aston Villa managed to win 3-2 at the death thanks to 9th minute goal after they came back from a 2-1 deficit. Al-Mohamadi was man of the match in their first game as he scored a goal and assisted another when his side defeated his old side Hull City 3-1.
It's worth mentioning that mega star Salah has been chosen as one of the best three strikers in the Champions League last season alongside the mighty Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to cap off a dream debut season with Liverpool. It's expected that Ronaldo will be voted the best striker in the competition after leading his side to the title in addition to being the top scorer of the tournament while Salah is expected to come second and put one over Messi thanks to an unbelievable European campaign for the Egyptian winger.
