Soccer on the side: Salah strikes and Al-Mohamadi excels
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 01 - 10 - 2013

Mohamed Salah continued his unbelievable start to the season as he found the back of the net once again in his side's 2-2 draw against Sion at home. The young Egyptian star added another goal to his tally this season as he gave Basel the lead in the 65th minute after he took the ball from his own half and made an excellent give and go with Streller who sent Salah through and watched him finish in style with an exquisite finish. Unfortunately Basel could not defend Salah's goal and conceded the equaliser three minutes from time with no other goals added in the remaining time much to the distress of Salah and his teammates. Apart from the goal, Salah played exceptionally well and tormented Sion's defenders throughout the game using his incredible speed and breathtaking skills to beat defenders time and time again and will surely be extremely disappointed not to leave the pitch with the winning goal. Al-Nenni made his comeback from injury this week as he came off the bench to play for the last few minutes. Despite the disappointing draw, Basel stayed top of the league as runners-up Grasshopper lost at home this weekend to stay a point behind Salah and Al-Nenni.
Still in Switzerland, Mahmoud Abdel-Meneim Kahraba played for only the last four minutes as Luzern drew at home against Thun in a game that ended 1-1. Kahraba is not a regular in the starting line-up yet as he's still settling in the country and at his new team but once he settles in he'll surely take the Swiss league by storm according to his manager Bernegger.
In England, Ahmed Al-Mohamadi and Hull City made sure their encouraging start to the season took another step forward as they defeated West Ham 1-0 at home to make it two wins in a row. Al-Mohamadi was very impressive on the right flank and played a crucial role in securing the win. First, it was Al-Mohamadi's cross to Brady that won a penalty for Hull as Brady was fouled on his way to meet Al-Mohamadi's inviting cross and converted the spot kick himself. Second, Al-Mohamadi made an absolutely brilliant save off the line with his chest to deny the visitors an equaliser and to gift his team all three points. West Ham's players complained that Al-Mohamadi blocked the ball with his hand but replays showed that the Egyptian star saved it with his chest and in style too. Furthermore, Al-Mohamadi's performance was set to be capped with a goal as Jussi Jaaskelainen somehow made an incredible save at the near post to block Al-Mohamadi's bullet header. Brady's cross was met brilliantly be Al-Mohamadi who thought he scored only to see one of the saves of the season so far denying him his second goal in as many games. On the other hand, Steve Bruce decided to give Gedo extra time to get up to speed before he makes his Premier League debut so he wasn't part of the squad that took on West Ham but is expected to be included n next week's game against Aston Villa at home. The win takes Hull to seventh place with 10 points from six games.
In the Championship, Adam Al-Abd watched from the bench once again as Brighton suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town away from home. Al-Abd's extended time on the bench seems will continue for some time unless any of the defenders suffers an injury. The loss takes Brighton to 12th place.
In Portugal, Ahmed Hassan Kouka and his team Rio Ave suffered a surprising 3-0 defeat at home at the hands of Nacional. Rio Ave were expected to win this game or at least gain a disappointing draw but they suffered a defeat and with a big margin. Kouka didn't have any chances throughout the game as his teammates were second best for the entire game and couldn't create any chances to get back into it. Rio Ave drops to seventh after that defeat.
In Belgium, Hossam Ghali and Ahmed Samir Farag of Lierse were defeated by Belgian giants Anderlecht 2-0 away from home. The result was expected even though Anderlecht are not at their best so far this season. Both Ghali and Farag played the full game and showed glimpses of their class especially Ghali who seemed in the mood. Ghali was enjoying the game and seemed very confident on the ball as he defeated his markers again and again with some amazing skills. Farag had an average game on the left flank and sent in some dangerous crosses in the first half but no one was there to take them. The defeat took Lierse to 11th place.
In Italy, Ahmed Hegazi's Fiorentina suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of high flying Inter Milan away from home in their first game of their two games this week. New signing Rossi gave Fiorentina the lead from the penalty spot but Hegazi's teammates conceded two goals towards the end of the game to go back home without any points. Fiorentina's second game of the week will be against Parma later this week.
Arab and African: African player of the year for the last two times Yaya Toure simply can't stop scoring as he scored another goal for Man City in their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa away from home.
In Germany, new signing Ghanaian superstar Kevin Prince Boateng scored the first goal for Schalke who drew 3-3 away from home against Hoffenheim.
Guinean midfielder Ibrahima Traore scored for Stuttgart as they defeated Frankfurt 4-0 away from home.
In France, Ghanaian star Andre Ayew scored the second goal for Marseille as they defeated Lorient 2-0 away from home.
Mali striker Cheikh Diabate scored the only goal of the game for Bordeaux as they drew 1-1against Evian away from home.
Meantime, Ivorian legend Didier Drogba is in the running to be the new Galatasaray manager after Fateh Terim was axed from his position this week. The Ivorian striker is being considered by the club for a player/coach role but faces competition from Manchester City's Roberto Mancini.
