The D Media Group, owner of DMC Channels, has announced the start of its broadcasting. In addition to the DMC general channel, the new satellite channel will expand to include DMC drama, DMC news, DMC kids, DMC HD and DMC theatre which will be launched on 27 March marking the international day of the theatre. DMC channels will also include DMC sports, adding up to seven channels in all. According to DMC, the channels aim to return Egypt's media to its leading position across the region and the world. The DMC inaugural, announced at a press conference on 14 January, was broadcast on the group's general DMC channel which featured businessmen, politicians, singers, journalists, actors and actresses. Emad Rabie, DMC executive manager, said, “With the ongoing circumstances of the current period impacting the economy, the media thus requires the establishment of a strong Egyptian media entity that can rise above narrow competitiveness. We intend to make the channel the first among other satellite channels. It will compete with no one but itself.” Rabie said DMC aimed to make a breakthrough in media content by working to the highest international standards. Among the celebrities who will be appearing at the DMC channels is singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab who will present a talk show where she will host Egyptian and other Arab actors. Actress Ghada Adel will present ‘Come for a Cup of Tea' and actor Ashraf Abdel-Baqi will be presenting ‘Live the Night'. Apart from the news DMC channel, the group's general theme is mainly recreational. According to Laila Abdel-Meguid, a mass communications professor at Cairo University, the channel is expected to respect the viewers' intelligence in an objective way. “Accuracy and objectiveness should be the channel's main goal, as well as to provide high quality programmes and shows. According to the channel's owner, it is made for Egyptian and other Arab families,” Abdel-Meguid said. Abdel-Meguid said that these days the media are confusing people by presenting inaccurate information. “There is no media content existing currently that represents the real situation in Egypt,” Abdel-Meguid asserted, adding that some satellite paint Egypt as a frustrating state that will demolish hope, “and no state or citizens can live without hope. The new DMC is expected to provide people with this hope due to its light and entertaining nature,” Abdel-Meguid said. He believes that the newly launched satellite channel aims to enhance media industry in Egypt in the face of the ongoing challenges. Rabie is expecting the new entity to have positive repercussions on the Egyptian media. “The new channel is addressing all society's different categories. It will address people's irritating problems from a positive perspective. For example, each problem, topic or issue that will be presented on the channel must include a clear solution to the problem,” Rabie said. Veteran writer Salah Eissa praised the inauguration of a new satellite channel and described it as “an expansion of the freedom of expression. “It is absolutely correct and necessary to have these channels because they are effective to our society,” Eissa said, adding that the launching of DMC “highlights the privileges of having such a light and full of fun channel which could comfort the public in an indirect way while respecting their mentality at the same time”.
