Wednesday, 14 August
6:00Egyptian police raid pro-Morsi sit-ins in Nasr City's Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Giza's Nahda Square. Security forces, backed by bulldozers, remove cement block barricades built by the Muslim Brotherhood. Forces use loud speakers to urge protesters to leave peacefully. They promise not to arrest anybody.
“In accordance with government instructions to take necessary measures towards the sit-ins at Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Nahda, and for the safety of the country, security forces started taking measures to disperse the sit-ins early Wednesday,” says an Interior Ministry statement.
8:00gunfire is heard at the Rabaa Al-Adaweya sit-in. There are reports of snipers stationed on the rooftops of adjacent buildings. The government claims the gunmen are Morsi supporters. The Brotherhood says they are members of the security forces.
9:30State TV reports two policemen, an officer and a conscript, have been killed and six wounded during the attempt to clear the sit-ins and that 200 Brotherhood protesters at the camps have been arrested for possessing firearms, gas canisters and other weapons.
10:00The Ambulance Authority says 13 are dead and at least 94 wounded during the clashes.
11:20Church of the Virgin Mary and Father Abram in Delga, Deir Mawwas village in Minya set alight by armed men who villagers say are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
11:30The Railway Authority cancels train services in and out of Cairo.
11:45The main Coptic Orthodox Church in Sohag is set ablaze by pro-Morsi protesters.
12:00Clashes continue at Rabaa Al-Adaweya .The Interior Ministry claims protesters on nearby rooftops and inside the camp opened fire at security forces as they dismantled tents and removed makeshift barriers erected by pro-Morsi protesters.
12:15The government says the police have been acting with restraint, using only tear gas and water cannon. An official statement warns acts of sabotage and attacks on state institutions will be met with a stern response but adds the right to political expression will be safeguarded as long as it is peaceful.
“The government insists on moving forward with the roadmap in a way that guarantees that no faction will be excluded from participating in the political process,” says the statement.
12:20 Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya calls on its supporters to take to the streets to condemn “coup crimes”. The statement by the hardline Islamist group also urges loyalists “enraged by police attacks on the Rabaa and Nahda sit-ins” not to attack “Christians or their religious buildings” .
12:30Clashes occur between armed Muslim Brotherhood members and police around the Nahda Square area. Media reports armed men hiding in the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University. Police chase a group of armed men inside Giza Zoo.
13:00 Media reports say 15 people killed at Rabaa Al-Adaweya.
13:15Clashes between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and security forces in many governorates. In Alexandria hundreds of members of the Muslim Brotherhood clash with security forces on the Corniche. Several buses set on fire by protesters.
In Suez pro-Morsi protesters fire at an army truck during a march heading to the governorate headquarters and the local security directorate. Morsi supporters set fire to a Franciscan school and a number of shops and cars on Al-Geish Street.
In Ismailia pro-Morsi protesters use Molotov cocktails to burn court and other government buildings.
In Upper Egypt clashes between protesters and the police leave seven police officers dead. In Assiut pro-Morsi protesters throw rocks and set a police car on fire in Mahata Square.
In Fayoum pro-Morsi supporters set fire to a Christian youth centre. Five churches in the governorate are attacked. Some are burned to the ground and all of them looted, says Bishop Ibram, local head of the Coptic Orthodox church.
In Aswan three people are killed and 22 injured in clashes between protesters and security forces. Morsi supporters torch five Central Security Forces vehicles, taking guns and tear gas canisters from inside the trucks.
In Al-Wadi Al-Gadiddozens of pro-Morsi supporters burn post office and attack security forces and governorate buildings.
13:30Al-Azhar calls for restraint and condemns the violence and bloodshed. Al-Azhar's Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb says Al-Azhar will not be dragged into political conflicts.
14:00Nine people are reported dead in Fayoum following fighting at police stations between protesters and security forces.
14:30A mob breaks into the Franciscan school in Beni Sweif, loots its contents, demolishes the cross on the main gate and replaces it with a black banner resembling the flag of Al-Qaeda. Within half an hour the 115-year-old main building is gutted by fire. Churches are attacked in Arish and Minya.
14:45 Police stationscome under attack in Fayoum, Assiut, Helwan and Sharqiya. An attack on Abu Kurkas police station in Minyaleaves eight dead and at least 30 injured.
15:00Islamists torch a Catholic school in and begin burning shops owned by Christians which they mark with a red X on the shop fronts.
15:30Morsi supporters open fire on security forces on Gameat Al-Dowal Street in Mohandessin. Video footage shows armed men believed to belong to the Muslim Brotherhood using automatic weapons to fire on security forces.
15:43Egypt's interim president declares a month-long state of emergency in Egypt and orders the army to take all necessary measures to preserve security.
Sky News TV confirms the death of its cameraman Mike Deane as he was covering the dispersal of the pro-Morsi sit-in in Rabaa.
15:45 There are widely different reports of the death toll. The Health Ministry reports 15 deaths so far from clashes at the sit-ins and 203 injuries.
16:00Qatar's Foreign Ministry calls on the Egyptian authorities to “refrain from using the security option in dealing with peaceful protests and to preserve the lives of Egyptians at protest sites” .
Turkey's President Abdullah Gul says “armed intervention on civilians, on people demonstrating is completely unacceptable.”
An EU spokesperson says reports from Egypt are “extremely worrying” and calls for restraint from Egyptian authorities. The German foreign minister calls on all sides to “return immediately to negotiations and avert an escalation of violence”. Alistair Burt, the UK Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East, writes on Twitter saying “restraint and dialogue are more urgent than ever”.
16:15Six security personnel — three officers and three conscripts — are reported killed while breaking up the Rabaa Al-Adaweya camp.
16:30In Fayoum the official death toll climbs to 17 following clashes at police stations between Morsi supporters and security forces.
In Tanta local residents form a human shield around the Mar Girgis Church after Morsi supporters attack it with stones.
16:45In Beni Sweif Morsi supporters storm a police station in Al-Wasty district and seize weapons. In Assiut Morsi supporters torch a court building and set a church ablaze.
16:50 The Interior Ministry announces it has arrested 543 people involved in clashes and riots nationwide. It says those arrested were carrying “automatic weapons, birdshot and other ammunition.
16:55The cabinet calls a curfew from 7pm until 6am in 12 governorates — Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Suez, Ismailia, Assiut, Sohag, Beni Sweif, Minya, Beheira, South Sinai and North Sinai.
17:00Morsi supporters set fire to a military building in Marsa Matrouh where clashes have been ongoing since the morning. The Health Ministry raises the casualty toll from the day's events to 95 deaths and 874 injuries.
17:10Two people are reported to have been killed and eight — including three Central Security Forces conscripts — injured by live fire from pro-Morsi demonstrators in Thaqafa Square in Sohag. Morsi supporters also set several shops in the square on fire.
17:30Mohamed Al-Baradei, vice president for foreign affairs, resigns.
“It has become hard for me to keep bearing responsibility for decisions of which I did not approve and the consequences of which I warned against,” he says in his letter of resignation.
18:00 The UScondemns the “violent crackdown” on protesters. White House spokesman Josh Earnest urges Egypt's military leaders to “respect the basic human rights of the Egyptian people” and says violence will make it more difficult for the parties involved to return to the path of peace and democracy.
18:05The Coptic Orthodox Church issues a statement condemning attacks on churches and Christian-owned properties and call on the authorities to provide protection for churches across Egypt.


Thursday, 15 August
10:00 Thirteen police officers and soldiers are killed in northern Sinai. The Interior Ministry announces that police have been authorised to use live ammunition to repel attacks against government buildings and security personnel.
12:00French President François Hollande summons Egypt's ambassador to France and says that “everything must be done to avoid a civil war”. Turkey recalls its ambassador, prompting a tit-for-tat move by Egypt. Germany, Italy, Britain and Spain also summon Egypt's ambassadors.
17:00President Barack Obama says the United States has cancelled joint military exercises with Egypt.
23:00Following an emergency meeting the president of the UN Security Council urges all parties in the crisis to exercise “maximum restraint”.

Friday, 16 August
13:00Thousands of Morsi supporters take to the streets of Cairo following Friday prayers. Military troops are deployed at sites across the city.
Protesters fire guns around Ramses Square and the 15 May Bridge in downtown Cairo.
14:30State media reports that a policeman has been killed in an attack on a Cairo checkpoint.
Security forces fire birdshot and tear gas to prevent protesters from reaching a government building in Tanta.
15:00The Health Ministry increases the death toll to 638.
16:00Protesters throw themselves from the October Bridge in an attempt to escape gunfire from security forces.
17:00Hundreds of Morsi supporters march through the Ghamra area near Ramses Square. Video footage aired by several Egyptian channels purports to show them carrying a black Al-Qaeda flag.
17:30Brotherhood supporters fire at security officers from the minaret of the Al-Fateh Mosque in Ramses Square. Around 1,000 pro-Morsi protesters are thought to be inside the mosque.

Saturday, 17 August
9:25 Army officers enter Al-Fateh Mosque to negotiate with pro-Morsi supporters to evacuate the building.
10:30Police announce 1,004 Muslim Brotherhood supporters were arrested on Friday. The Ministry of Interior says many of them were carrying weapons.
11:30The trial of ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons is adjourned to 25 August.
3:30The Ministry of Interior announces the arrest of Mohamed Al-Zawahri, a leading figure in the Egyptian Jihadist Salafist group and the brother of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahri who in an audio recording early in August accused the US of plotting with Egypt's military, seculars and Christians to overthrow Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
4:00Grand Mufti Shawki Allam calls on authorities to respond with an “iron fist” to those “terrorising citizens”. He says carrying arms during demonstrations and marches is religiously prohibited.
5:50Security forces take control of Al-Fateh Mosque and arrest a number of Muslim Brotherhood members.

Sunday, 18 August
9:45UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon calls for an end to violent protests and the “excessive use of force” in handling them.
11:28Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb urges the Muslim Brotherhood to accept a “peaceful solution” and engage in talks to seek a way out of the crisis.
13:30Tamarod campaign launches a petition calling for the cancellation of US aid and the peace treaty with Israel.
17:41Egypt's army chief General Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi says protecting the “people's will” is a greater honour than ruling the country. In a speech at a meeting with police and military the leader of the Armed Forces warns that against allowing the political conflict to develop into religious fighting which would drag Egypt down a “dark tunnel”.
20:00The Interior Ministry says that 36 pro-Morsi detainees have been killed in a prison escape attempt, asphyxiated by tear gas. Earlier Egyptian security forces claimed they had aborted an escape attempt by over 600 detained supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi from Abu Zaabal prison, north of Cairo.
21:00The Interior Ministry bans popular committees set up by locals to protect their neighbourhoods.

Monday, 19 August
8:30Islamic militants ambush two mini-buses carrying off-duty policemen in Sinai, executing 25 and wounding two. The attack took place close to Rafah. The victims were dressed in civilian clothes at the time of their murder.
14:00The UK suspends cooperation with Egyptian security agencies.
14:30Jordan's prime minister urges the military to remain “firm to combat terrorism and attempts to meddle in its affairs”.
16:00Mohamed Morsi is detained for another 15-day on charges of inciting violence against protesters at presidential palace in December 2012.
16:15The prosecution orders the detention of 255 members of the Muslim Brotherhood pending investigations into charges that include murder, attempted murder and arson.
17:30 Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal visits Paris to discuss the EU positions on the Egyptian crisis. He announces that Arab and Islamic countries will step in should Western nations cut aid packages to Cairo.
“To those who have announced they are cutting their aid to Egypt, or threatening to do that, [we say that] Arab and Muslim nations are rich... and will not hesitate to help Egypt,” says Faisal following a meeting with President François Hollande.
19:00State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki says the US is continuing its review of aid to Egypt and no decisions have been made. He adds that Washington's funding for non-governmental agencies will remain whether or not the US imposes restrictions on aid.
20:30The bodies of the 25 Egyptian soldiers killed in Sinai arrive at Al-Maza military airport. The Egyptian president declares three days national mourning.
Tuesday, 20 August
1:30Egyptian security announces the arrest of the Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie in an apartment in Nasr City, eastern Cairo. Photos circulate on social media showing Badie, dressed in a galabiya, sitting between two policemen wearing bulletproof vests in a police van.
9:30The Muslim Brotherhood names Deputy Supreme Guide Mahmoud Ezzat as its acting leader.
