Ahly's Gomaa hints at retirement after Club World Cup Egypt and Ahly defender reveals his desire to hang up his boots after participation in the Club World Cup in Morocco
Egypt and Ahly veteran defender Wael Gomaa has said that he could retire from football after concluding his participation with the Reds in the Club World Cup this December. "I am seriously thinking of retiring football at the end of the Club World Cup," Gomaa was quoted as saying on FIFA official website. "But I will continue until the end of the season as I expect pressure from Ahly's management and the technical manager," he added. African champions Ahly will start their World Club Cup campaign on 14 December against Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande of China. The winner will face European champions Bayern Munich in the semifinal on 17 December. "We should do our best to reach an advanced place in the tournament ranking," said Gomaa. "Guangzhou's game won't be easy as they are headed by Italian coach Marcello Lippi." "Winning Guangzhou's game will lead Ahly to face European champions Bayern Munich that will be a tough game so I want to play that game to honor the Arabian and African football," Gomaa concluded. The 38-year-old defender will be part of the Ahly squad that take part in Egypt Premier League kicks off on 26 December. Gomaa is the player who played in the African tournament the most times, with 95 appearances. He also gained 25 titles with the Egyptian national team and with Ahly throughout his career.
