Egypt's Morsi appoints new head of public finance watchdog Within context of ongoing personnel reshuffles, prominent reformist judge Hisham Geneina is appointed head of Egypt's Central Auditing Authority
Prominent reformist judge Hisham Geneina was appointed head of Egypt's Central Auditing Authority (CAO), the country's watchdog for public finances, on Thursday. The CAO had remained without a permanent head since the end of Gawdat El-Malt's tenure in October of last year. Since then, Monira Ahmed, a senior employee, has assumed temporary leadership of the authority. In his first statements following his appointment, Geneina told Egypt's official state news agency MENA that he planned to put "reform" of the CAO at the top of his agenda. Roughly 2,500 CAO employees staged several sit-ins at the authority's Cairo headquarters early this year to demand better wages and reform of the organisation. Their chief demand at the time was the appointment of a new CAO president. They also demanded the full independence of the CAO, established in 1942, from the government. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi appointed Geneina within the context of recent sweeping reshuffles of key government posts. In his new position, Geneina will enjoy the rank of minister.
