Visionary Africa in photography and architecture, at Al-Azhar Park
An African art exhibition visits Egypt after Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, before continuing on to other African capitals

Organised jointly by the European Commission and the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Centre for Fine Arts) in Brussels, "Visionary Africa: Art at Work" is an itinerant urban exhibition of contemporary African artistic practices, including artist residencies, showcases of local artists, and workshops on art and development in modern urban centres in Africa. It will be hosted at Al-Azhar Park.
The project aims to focus on the importance of culture and creativity as a motor for development, and it was timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence of several African countries.
The pavilion is designed by Ghanaian architect David Adjaye and will host a number of exhibitions:
A selection from the photography exhibit A Useful Dream, celebrating 50 years of African photography, curated by Simon Njami;
The photodocumentary, Urban Africa, a decade long personal survey by David Adjaye on the architecture of African capitals;
A showcase of young, up-and-coming Egyptian contemporary artists, curated by Moataz Nasr, director of Darb 1718.
The opening event will take place on Wednesday, 15 February, at 5pm (by invitation only), and the public exhibition will begin on Thursday, 16 February, and will continue until 7 March.

On Friday, 17 February, a workshop will be held at Darb 1718 (by invitation only - contact Darb 1718 for more info).
