BREAKING: Hunger striking Mohamed Soltan deported to the United States It is unclear if Soltan, on hunger strike for 489 days, had to give up his Egyptian nationality before being deported
Hunger striking Mohamed Soltan, who was sentenced to life in prison in April, was deported Saturday to the United States, where he holds dual nationality, Soltan's family announced. "The US government has successfully secured Mohamed's deportation back home to the US, mercifully concluding this dark chapter for Mohamed and our family," a family statement read. Soltan, who was on hunger strike for over 489 days, was charged with setting up an operations room at the pro-Mohamed Morsi Rabaa Al-Adawiya protest camp in August 2013. His family say he was not a Muslim Brotherhood member and had returned to Egypt from the US to care for his sick mother. It is unclear if Soltan had to give up his Egyptian nationality to be deported. According to a newly passed law, foreign nationals can be deported to serve their sentences or be retried in their own country. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/131506.aspx
