Two policemen were killed in Cairo late on Tuesday after being shot by unknown assailants, Egypt's interior ministry said. Unidentified gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on a car carrying Colonel Wael Tahoon and a conscript in the eastern district of Ain Shams in Cairo, killing both men, a statement by the ministry said. Once a senior investigation officer in Matariya neighbourhood, an Islamist stronghold, Tahoon is believed to have been specifically targeted in the attack. The assault is the latest in near daily violence targeting security forces amid an Islamist insurgency that has spiked since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. The militancy, mainly based in the border North Sinai region, has since killed hundreds of police and troops. Smaller-scale attacks have also targeted the capital Cairo and other mainland cities, leading at times to civilian casualties. Egyptian authorities have cracked down on Islamists since Morsi's removal, designating his Muslim Brotherhood group a terrorist organisation. The group insists it is peaceful. Tuesday's attack came hours after a court sentenced Morsi to 20 years in prison over charges of ordering the arrest and torture of demonstrators involved in clashes in 2012 when he was still Egypt's elected president. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/128334.aspx
