Martin Scorsese backs classic cinema at Cairo festival International Cinema Institute, chaired by Martin Scorsese, is among the groups presenting classic cinema at the Cairo International Film Festival
Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) announced on Tuesday that its November edition will include a collaboration with the International Cinema Institute - chaired by American director Martin Scorsese - along with the Polonia Archive. Their role is to present a programme of classical international cinema celebrating some inconic directors such as Charlie Chaplin. The International Cinema Institute strives to save the world's cinematic heritage. It is the institute which in 2009 restored Egyptian film 'The Mummy' by Shady Abdel-Salam (1930-1986). Polonia Archive is one of Italy's most respectived cinema archives which also works in film restoration and preservation. CIFF's 36th edition in November 2014 is the first under the leadership of Samir Farid and a new team of directors. Since the outbreak of the Egyptian revolution, CIFF has suffered several disruptions. The first of which was its complete cancellation in 2011. In 2012, many screenings had to be shifted or postponed indefinitely due to political clashes happening nearby. The 2013 edition was also cancelled, but the team working on the fesitval have been promising many changes and a strong artistic revamp for the 2014 edition. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/108857.aspx
