Deadly disobedience: A driver from the village of el-Akhmas near el-Sadat City, el-Menoufia Governorate killed his wife because she went to visit her family and her children by her former husband. He beat her to death and set fire to their flat to try and cover up for his crime.
Itemad Soleiman (35) died in the ground-floor flat of her husband, Saeed Ibrahim. She was lying on the floor in their bedroom when her body was found. Her death was suspicious, because the fire hadn't reached the bedroom before it was extinguished, after a neighbour had called the emergency services.
Because Itemad's body wasn't burnt, the injuries caused by the beating were clearly visible. Saeed (47), who worked driving bulldozers, was soon arrested. He admitted killing his wife, because she disobeyed him when he ordered her not to visit her family.
Orfi turns violent: Six people were injured in an argument between two families in the village of el-Kafr el-Sharqi near el-Hamoul, Kafr el-Sheikh Governorate.
The problem was that a man from one of the families married a woman from the other family the orfi (unregistered) way, without telling her family. The injured parties were taken to el-Hamoul Central Hospital.
Five of them were named as Mahmoud Aql Mohamed (43), who works at an Azhari institute and married the woman; his brother, Ayman (30); brothers Moustafa and Ibrahim Attia Ibrahim (aged 33 and 32) from the family of the woman; and the woman's 70-year-old grandfather, named only as Attia.
Ten won't hang: The Court of Cassation has rescinded a ruling by Kafr el-Sheikh Criminal Court, which in February 2009 sentenced ten men to death and a juvenile to 15 years behind bars, having found them guilty of abducting a housewife from her home and raping her in the fields at knifepoint.
As was widely reported in the local newspapers at the time, it was on 7th June 2006 that four young men were attending a wedding party being held in the street in the village of el-Hamrawi, Kafr el-Sheikh Governorate.
During the party, they spotted a pretty 23-year-old woman standing on the balcony of her home, overlooking the street.
They beckoned her to come down, but she declined their offer, so they rushed up the stairs, forced open the door to her home and dragged her away.
They forced her to get into a microbus and started shooting at other revellers who tried to save her. They drove off with their victim into the fields where they violated her, before phoning their friends and inviting them to come and join in. Seven of them did so.
The defence team for the eleven condemned decided to appeal, because they said there were irregularities in the first trial. The victim was saved by another man, who was invited by the suspects to rape her.
He recognised the woman and went to the police, who arrested the eleven. Eight of the men were named as Rami Ali, Farouq Ezzat, Ibrahim Mohamed, Mohamed Gomaa, Fawzi Ahmed, Ali Attia, Hameda Mohamed and Mohamed Gaber, while the juvenile was named as el- Sayyed Attallah (16).
