Delegation from AL to visit Russia on Monday to discuss Russian-Ukrainian conflict
Published in Daily News Egypt on 03 - 04 - 2022

The Arab League (AL) announced on Saturday that a ministerial delegation will head to the Russian capital of Moscow on Monday to discuss the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The AL's statement said that the delegation "will hold talks with the Russian side on ways to reach a solution to this crisis, which has caused serious repercussions that are currently being witnessed around the world, especially on the humanitarian front."
"The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Sudan, along with members of the Arab Contact Group on Ukraine are expected to take part with Ahmed Aboul-Gheit — the Secretary-General of the AL — in the upcoming talks in Moscow," a statement from the Russian Embassy in Cairo said.
The AL formed a contact group to follow up on the repercussions of the war in Ukraine and contribute to resolving the conflict raging there.
The AL's council expressed concern at the developments in Ukraine and supported all efforts aiming to resolve the crisis through dialogue and diplomacy in order to preserve the security and safety of the peoples in this important region of the world.
This came in a statement issued at the end of the council's extraordinary meeting on Saturday, which was chaired by Kuwait at the request of Egypt to discuss the latest developments of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The AL recommended the formation of an Arab contact group at the ministerial level to follow up and conduct the necessary consultations and contacts with the parties concerned with a view to contributing to a diplomatic solution to the crisis and to entrust the secretariat with the necessary consultations to adopt this recommendation.
Furthermore, the league stressed the importance of respecting the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, supporting efforts aiming to reduce tensions, and calling for calmness and self-control to prevail in order to ensure the return of stability and allow life to return to normal.
It also expressed concern at the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the region of the conflict and stressed the importance of continued cooperation and coordination among Arab States to maintain the security and safety of Arab communities currently present in the area, facilitate the transit of those wishing to cross into neighbouring countries, and maintain the security and safety of the members of Arab diplomatic missions.
Additionally, the AL reviewed developments in the situation and its implications for international peace and security and its direct impact on Arab States.
