Al-Sisi reiterates support for Libya to preserve its unity, sovereignty
Published in Daily News Egypt on 21 - 12 - 2021

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi affirmed his full support for every measure taken to achieve the supreme interest of Libya, activate the free will of its people, and preserve the unity and sovereignty of its lands, stated the Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.
Al-Sisi's remarks came during his meeting with Chairperson of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed El Manfi, in Cairo. The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry; Head of General Intelligence, Minister Abbas Kamel; and Libya's permanent representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Abdel Muttalib Idris.
El Manfi hailed the vital Egyptian role and its sincere efforts led by the President Al-Sisi to restore security and stability in Libya and unify state institutions, especially the military institution represented by the Libyan National Army, in complementarity with the efforts of the 5 + 5 committee.
The committee consists of five military commanders from each of the Libyan National Army (LNA) controlling eastern and central Libya, and the militias controlling western Libya.
El-Manfi has also presented the overall current internal political situation in Libya, where it was agreed to intensify consultation and coordination between the two sides during the coming period to follow up on developments in the political process and procedures for managing the transitional phase, in a way that helps restore Libya's stability and unify its institutions.
Libya's presidential election is scheduled for Friday. The vote is meant to cap a United Nations-led peace process after a decade of conflict.
Libya, torn apart by a decade of conflict since its 2011 revolution, has seen a year of relative calm since a landmark October 2020 ceasefire, and the UN has been pushing for elections as part of a multi-pronged peace effort.
More than 2.5 million Libyan citizens are expected to vote in the presidential elections on 24 December, according to a roadmap set by the United Nations (UN)-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.
