US Ambassador Inaugurates the New American Corner in Alexandria
Published in Daily News Egypt on 18 - 05 - 2021

US Ambassador to Egypt Jonathan R Cohen and Embassy partner AMIDEAST inaugurated, on Tuesday, the new American Corner Alexandria, located at the former site of the US Consulate General.
The latest iteration of an American cultural presence in Alexandria, which began with a library in 1947, the Corner features a library with resources on American history, literature, and society.
Starting in June, it will offer a full calendar of virtual programmes, and in-person events as soon as conditions permit, for students and young professionals in Alexandria and the Delta region.
Through the American Corner, AMIDEAST will also provide educational advising for students seeking to study in the US, as well as college preparation training and other services.
Ambassador Cohen said, "Last year, nearly 50,000 Egyptians benefitted from American Spaces programmes that helped them learn more about American culture and business, develop their English language skills, and engage with US diplomats."
"We're delighted that this new American Corner will offer even more opportunities to Egyptians in Alexandria and beyond to discover the US as they prepare for their futures," he added.
During his visit, Cohen toured the newly refurbished space, and met with the AMIDEAST team and high-achieving high school students who are part of the Competitive College Club. These students are also preparing for studies at American colleges and universities.
The American Corner in Alexandria is the third such space in Egypt, joining the American Center Cairo at the US Embassy, and the American Corner Maadi at the Maadi Public Library in Cairo.
