Egypt plans to increase electric connection capacity with Jordan to 1,000MW
"Relations between two countries witnessing positive development in all fields, especially in electricity sector," say sources
Published in Daily News Egypt on 17 - 01 - 2019

The Ministry of Electricity has started carrying out feasibility studies in order to increase the electric connection capacity with Jordan to 1,000MW instead of 450MW.
Sources informed Daily News Egypt that a committee was formed by the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company in order to prepare the studies, in cooperation with officials from the Jordanian Energy Ministry. An agreement was reached to increase the capacity to 1,000MW in the first phase, and to be followed by an expansion in the line to enable the exchange of 2,000MW.
The sources added that the formed committee aims to set each side's technical and financial commitments and the timetable for the project's implementation in order to choose the participating companies, as well as the conditions and controls of the tenders.
The sources added that the Egyptian and Jordanian companies working the field of energy are seeking to hold a bilateral alliance in order to implement an expansion in the electricity connection line between the two countries.
The project is part of the eight-phase linking project to connect the electricity grids of Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Turkey together, through financing from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.
The sources said that relations between Egypt and Jordan are witnessing a positive development in all fields, especially in the electricity sector. It is planned to enhance the electricity grids and increase their production capacities, within the framework of the comprehensive electrical connection.
Jordan is one of the first countries to restructure the electricity sector and it established a body to organise the sector. It has also taken part in future regional projects such as the project to connect the countries of the Mediterranean together and establish an open market for electric energy.
The Ministry of Electricity has carried out several studies to launch electric connection projects with a global strategy, making Egypt a starting point for energy across the world, especially with reserves in the grid estimated to be 18,000MW.
