CAIRO: Egypt's al-Ahly football club announced it would grant each family of those killed in the February 1 violence in Port Said 50,000 Egyptian pounds as a first installment. A new office at the club's headquarters in the Cairo neighborhood of al-Gezeera was formed to serve the families after a bank account was started to receive donations to aid the families. It was also reported by local media that Egypt's national team manager Bob Bradley donated 60,000 pounds and Ahly's manager Manuel Jose another 375,000 pounds. The club itself said it deposited one million Egyptian pounds as the core fund for the account. The violence in Port Said left at least 75 people dead when fans of the home team al-Masry attacked Ahly fans following their club's 3-1 victory. The “massacre” left Egypt on edge, especially after eyewitnesses reported the security forces at the stadium tasked with ensuring the safety of the fans stood by and did not intervene to stop the violence before it spiraled out of control. They were also reported to have closed and locked gates of the stadium, leaving fans trapped inside as al-Masry fans attacked with knives, firecrackers, batons and also through people from the top levels of the stadium.
