CAIRO: Thousands of Egyptians gathered outside the All Saints Church in Alexandria on New Year's Eve to honor the first anniversary of last year's bombing that killed 21 people and wounded hundreds others. The crowd refused to allow the head of the Alexandria's state security to the scene and kicked him out, blaming him for the bombing and questioned how nobody was brought to justice in the case, even after one-year since the incident. In a video circulated online, the crowd forced General Khaled Gharaba out, chanting against him, as he was in his position when the bombing happened. Thousands of people stood outside the church, many of them forming a human shield to protect the church that was rocked during last year's New Year's mass when a car bomb went off outside the building. Egyptians accuse the state security of not securing the church as they should have, noting that each church has a police car and security personnel located in front. Activists accuse Gharaba, in name, of falsely creating cases against the striking workers in the famous 2008 strike in Mahala that saw tens of thousands take to the streets. Ghoraba was also accused by activists of killing protesters in Alexandria on January 28 during the 18 days of protests that led to the ousting of the former government of Hosni Mubarak. He has never faced investigation or charged over accusations and has been promoted since.
