CAIRO: Abdel Nasser al-Gabry, a prominent suspect in the “Camel Battle” massacre, died Tuesday after a long battle with liver cancer. Al-Gabry was on trial on charges of paying and mobilizing criminals to attack protesters in Tahrir Square on February 2 and 3, in what is known as the “camel battle” as the hired “thugs” were riding camels and horses, carrying various weapons such as swords and knives, randomly attacking and killing people. Hundreds were killed and hundreds more were injured in Tahrir during these two days. Al-Gabry was released from jail last June on 200,000 Egyptian pounds bail after his defense team pleaded with the court that his health condition had severely deteriorated. He was a former member of Parliament for the Haram district in Giza and served two terms. BM
