US: Animal rights group posts video of country star Troy Gentry killing bear An animal rights group has posted a video of country music star Troy Gentry killing a captive, tame black bear in Minnesota. The group SHARK — Showing Animals Respect and Kindness — obtained the video from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through a lawsuit under the Freedom of Information Act, and posted it on YouTube on Monday. Indian Stars Fight For Animal Rights Indian stars NARGISE BAGHERI and MALAIKA ARORA KHAN have teamed up to highlight animal cruelty issues in their homeland as part of an international PETA campaign. The actresses have stripped down for provocative posters aimed at raising awareness about caged birds and working horses. Bagheri strips off completely and straddles a brown horse statue as part of a campaign to ban horse-drawn tongas in India's cities, while Bollywood star Khan dons feathers and a fetching white two-piece to highlight the plight of captured birds like macaws, which are often kept in cages so small they can't spread their wings. New Zealand: Jews fundraise to fight animal welfare code Heads of the Jewish communities in Auckland and Wellington are calling on people to write to Prime Minister John Key and his Agriculture Minister, David Carter, to protest the Government's proposed animal-welfare ban on shechita, the Jewish ritual slaughter of livestock. The lack of locally-killed kosher meat could be the thin end of a wedge in terms of making it difficult for Orthodox Jews to live in this country, the Jewish leaders said. Animal Rights Activists Lose Lynx Lawsuit in Maine Animal rights activists have lost their latest battle to stop hunting and trapping in Maine. On October 20 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston affirmed a 2009 decision by Judge John Woodcock, Jr., dismissing the animal rights groups' Canada lynx lawsuit. This decision provides a very important national precedent. It's been a long trail getting to this point, but here's a quick summary: On November 10, 2009, Judge Woodcock of the Federal District Court in Bangor denied a request from the Animal Welfare Institute of Idaho and the Wildlife Institute of Maine for a permanent injunction against the state of Maine to stop hunting and trapping in order to protect Canada lynx. Ballot issue breeds contempt between dog breeders, animal-rights activists The forces for and against Missouri's Proposition B are making their cases with cute and cuddly puppies. But make no mistake, the contest to convince voters is a down and dirty dogfight. Prop B on the Nov. 2 statewide ballot will ask voters whether to enact the “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act,” a set of laws that would substantially sharpen regulations on dog breeders. BM
