The FIFA World Cup is the world's most watched tournament in football which is held every four years. It has been awarded 20 times since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of World War II and It was resumed again in 1950.
Brazil has made the most appearances at the FIFA World Cup tournaments followed by, among others, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, England, France, Belgium, and Uruguay.
The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the inaugural edition of the World Championship and it took place in Uruguay. All matches were played in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, the majority at the Estadio Centenario, which was built for the tournament. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in the final, and became the first nation to win the World Cup.
The 1934 FIFA World Cup was the 2nd edition of the World Championship, and was held in Italy. The final took place at the now-closed Stadio Nazionale where Italy won against Czechoslovakia 2–1
The 1938 FIFA World Cup was the 3rd edition of the World Championship, and was held in France. Italy won the championship for the second time in a row against Hungary 4–2 in the final which was held at Stade Olympique de Colombes.
The 1950 FIFA World Cup was the 4th edition of the World Championship and the first tournament after World War II and the first to include British participants as England withdrew from FIFA in 1920, because of unwillingness to play against the countries they had been at war with. Uruguay beat the host country Brazil 2-1 in the final which took place at Maracana, to win the championship title for the second time.
The 1954 FIFA World Cup was the 5th edition of the World Championship, and was held in Switzerland. West Germany won the World Cup for the first time beating Hungary 3–2 in the final at Wankdorf Stadium.
The 1958 FIFA World Cup was the 6th edition of the World Championship, and was held in Sweden. The tournament was won by Brazil for the first time, beating Sweden 5–2 in the final which was held at Råsunda Stadium.
The 1962 FIFA World Cup was the 7th edition of the World Championship and was held in Chile where Brazil claimed the second World Cup title, beating Czechoslovakia 3–1 in the final which took place at Estadio Nacional de Chile.
The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the 8th edition of the World Championship and was held in England. The tournament was won by England for the first time, beating West Germany 4–2 in the final which was held at Wembley Stadium.
The 1970 FIFA World Cup was the 9th edition of the World Championship and was held in Mexico. Brazil defeated the two-time former champion, Italy, 4–1 in the final held at Estadio Azteca, winning their third title.
The 1974 FIFA World Cup was the 10th edition of the World Championship and was held in West Germany. The tournament was won by the host nation which claimed their second title, defeating the Netherlands in the final held at Olympiastadion, Munich, 2–1.
The 1978 FIFA World Cup was the 11th edition of the World Championship and was held in Argentina. The tournament was won by the host country that claimed their first title, beating the Netherlands 3–1 at River Plate's home stadium Estadio Monumental.
The 1982 FIFA World Cup was the 12th edition of the World Championship and was held in Spain. Italy won their third title, after beating West Germany 3–1 in the final that took place at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the 13th edition of the World Championship and was held in Mexico. Argentina claimed their second title after defeating West Germany 3–2 in the final at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca.

The 1990 FIFA World Cup was the 14th edition of the World Championship and was held in Italy. West Germany won their third title after beating Argentina 1–0 in the final at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
The 1994 FIFA World Cup was the 15th edition of the World Championship and was held in United States. Brazil beat Italy 3–2, winning their fourth title in the final that took place at Rose Bowl.
The 1998 FIFA World Cup was the 16th edition of the World Championship and was held in France. The tournament was won by the host country, France, which claimed their first title, after defeating Brazil 3–0 in the final at Stade de France.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th edition of the World Championship, and was held in South Korea & Japan. Brazil won the tournament for a record fifth time beating Germany 2–0 in the final which took place in Yokohama International Stadium.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup was the 18th edition of the World Championship, and was held in Germany. Italy won their fourth title, after beating France 5–3 in the final held at Olympiastadion in Munich.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th edition of the World Championship, and was held in South Africa. Spain claimed their first title, after defeating the Netherlands 1–0 in the final that took place at Soccer City.
The 2014 was the 20th edition of the World Championship, and was held in Brazil. Germany defeated Argentina 1–0 In the final at Maracana Stadium to win the tournament, securing their fourth world title.
