Egyptian former foreign minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit was unanimously elected Arab League Secretary General late Thursday evening, after 10 hours of consultation among the Arab foreign ministers at a Cairo summit. Egypt has officially nominated Aboul-Gheit as chair of the Arab League in succession to Nabil Al-Araby who kept his post for almost five years. Foreign ministers from the 22 countries constituting the league started their meeting at 10:00 am Cairo Local Time to consider the top Arab League job. Aboul-Gheit was the last foreign minister under the rule of ousted president Hosni Mubarak. He remained in his post for about seven years before the cabinet was forced to resign under pressure in the wake of the January Revolution of 2011.
