Mansour ban THE PRESS Syndicate this week called on all publications to refrain from publishing the name or photo of Zamalek Club Chairman Mortada Mansour for a year after a complaint was filed against him by a group of journalists. On 6 November a number of journalists who are members of the club were prevented from entering it and were assaulted by its security guards. The journalists who were attacked condemned the incident in a statement, adding they were publicly accosted and humiliated in front of the club's main entrance. A suggestion by Mansour to appear at the syndicate to resolve the crisis was rejected by council members. At the same meeting, council members also decided to sue the controversial club chairman and asked parliament to allow an investigation into Mansour who is an MP. The syndicate also expressed its full solidarity with journalists at Al-Alam Al-Youm newspaper who staged what is still an ongoing sit-in on 21 October to protest against unpaid salaries, unpaid social security contributions and a would-be closure of the newspaper. Members of the newspaper's management will be referred to an internal disciplinary committee for investigation, the council stated. Afroto's killer jailed CAIRO Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced a police officer convicted of murdering a 22-year-old detainee at Mokattam police station to three years in prison. The court also handed a policeman accomplice in the crime a six-month jail term. In January, the two beat a detainee, Mohamed Abdel-Hakim and nicknamed Afroto, to death. A forensic medicine committee confirmed in July that Afroto died after being beaten, refuting previous claims that his death was the result of a drug overdose. The committee's report found that the severe injuries caused by the assault were the cause of death. A prosecution statement accused the two policemen of illegally detaining a person and of beating him to death. The policeman, according to the prosecution's statement, pushed Afroto down while the other defendant kicked him in the chest, resulting in the injuries cited in an earlier forensic report. The report revealed that the cause of Afroto's death was internal bleeding caused by a broken rib and a laceration in the left lung due to a severe hit by a solid object. After Afroto's death, dozens of people demonstrated in front of Mokattam police station and clashed with security personnel. Nine policemen were reportedly injured. Over 102 protesters were arrested and referred to trial on charges of damaging public and private property and taking part in an unlicensed demonstration. Waiting for results AN EGYPTIAN woman residing in Kuwait has accused five Kuwaiti women of beating her with their shoes. She said the incident took place at a beach where she was walking with a friend and her son. One of the five women, riding a bike, hit the woman's son. When the Egyptian blamed her, the Kuwaiti women knocked her down and started hitting her with their shoes and pulling out her hair. Kuwaiti security personnel intervened. Both sides were referred to an investigation. The woman has filed a lawsuit. Later, Egyptian authorities asked for an investigation into the incident. Egyptian Minister of Immigration Nabila Makram said Kuwaiti officials had already started taking the legal procedures regarding the incident. Makram expressed her confidence in the Kuwaiti judiciary, adding that she was closely following up the developments. Both the Egyptian embassy and Egyptian consulate in Kuwait have contacted the woman and are following up the investigation. Makram has urged that the incident not be propagated on social media in order not to influence the course of the investigation. Wafd Party elections WAFD Party elections were held Friday with 116 members competing for the 50 seats of the higher committee and 21 candidates for the secretariat general's five seats. Members of the liberal party believe the elections will help the party re-build ahead of municipal polls next year and parliamentary elections in 2020. Voting witnessed a huge turnout with members of the general assembly keen on participating. A total of 3,493 out of 5,774 Wafdists voted. However, a delay in announcing results for more than 24 hours has led many Wafdists to accuse election supervisors of rigging the vote at some polling stations.
