Road review
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 26 - 10 - 2017

Two years ago the government started a vast construction plan to connect the whole country, specifically the regions with high potential of investment. Roads which meet the top standards in safety and quality are being built for LE36 billion. Despite only two years of work, some roads have been delivered.
Al-Galala Road is one of Egypt's new highways that cuts through the high mountains of Ain Al-Sokhna going parallel with the old coastal road. For people going to Gouna, Hurghada, Safaga, Sahl Hashish, Suma Bay and Marsa Alam, Al-Galala will provide safety, an alternative to the dangerous coastal road which is full of acute twists with cars going side to side in opposite directions. The 82km Al-Galala Road entrance is found on the right hand side, on the Cairo-Sokhna road right before you get to Ain Al-Sokhna toll station. It's better to keep your fuel tank full before hitting Al-Galala Road which has several wataniya fuel stations but which look like they are not fully built.
Al-Galala is 650 metres above sea level, providing several exits towards Porto Sokhna resort and others along the coastal road. At such an altitude your vehicle is expected to consume more fuel as it climbs the mountain. This is probably the road's only disadvantage, along with its dangerous unmarked dead end especially at night.
The road is generally safe at night with cat eyes marking the sides and tarmac.
