Egypt's President Sisi names two new members to Al-Azhar Council for Senior Scholars

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree appointing two new members to Al-Azhar Council for Senior Scholars.
The two members are Mohamed Abdel Rahman El-Duwaini, Al-Azhar Undersecretary, and Fathi Othman El-Feqi, professor at the Sharia and Law Faculty in Cairo.
The pair got the highest votes at the council's elections.
The decree was published in the Official Gazette on Sunday.
Chaired by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the council was founded in 1911. It was replaced in 1961 by the Centre for Islamic Research.
In 2012, it was restructured to carry out several specializations, most prominently nominating the Grand Mufti of Egypt (subject to presidential approval) and electing the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.
It is also regarded as the final authority in determining if new legislation is compliant with Islamic Shari'a law.
