Egypt's Minister of Health Hala Zayed said on Wednesday that 5,845 new coronavirus infections have been recorded this week, compared to 1,248 during the same week last year, a nearly five-fold increase. During a cabinet meeting, Minister Zayed said that Cairo, Giza, Minya, Fayoum and Sohag are the governorates with the highest number of coronavirus cases. Egypt has seen a surge in coronavirus cases in the past three weeks, with officials warning that the country is approaching the peak of the third coronavirus wave because of social gatherings during Ramadan. Egypt reported 1,003 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the highest single-day rise since 8 January, bringing the total infection tally to 224,517 since the outbreak began last year. The health minister said that in early May, Cairo's International Exhibition Centre will be used to host a mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign. In previous statements, Zayed said that the centre can accommodate 10,000 people daily and has a large waiting area that would allow for social distancing.
