In celebration of World Environment Day, which fell on 5 June, a 10-day campaign for the Mediterranean will kick off on 11 June, featuring numerous activities related to environmental issues, and opportunities for participation. Launched in Egypt under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of the Environment and with the support of the EU-funded 3-year (2019-2022) Med Dialogue for Rights and Equality programme, the campaign includes an online forum inviting community members to take part in activities, competitions and share their thoughts on environmental issues. The activities will be implemented with the cooperation of ten countries in the southern Mediterranean: Jordan, Algeria, Tunisia, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Egypt and Mauritania. The forum's press release reveals that this is the first edition of the competition, which kicks off on 10 June. It comes amid exceptional circumstances that have forced the world to reconsider the environmental risks surrounding our planet, reads the release. The aim of the forum is to offer to the public via social media an opportunity to reduce pollution and waste, think about reduction of plastic consumption and opt for a cleaner life and a more sustainable environment. It also informs them about the importance of fighting pollution and preserving the environment. The forum includes awareness-raising seminars and lectures with experts and owners of environmental initiatives, and activities for creative minds. In the creative sector, short and documentary filmmakers, wildlife photographers, nature-lovers and owners of environmental initiatives are invited to participate in a competition that will tackle environmental issues and challenges.
