Published in Ahram Online on 08 - 01 - 2020

The Egyptian government shed light on Wednesday on the major achievements made by the antiquities sector during 2019, including the key projects implemented, new discoveries made, and the restoration of archaeological sites.
In an info-graph issued on Wednesday, the cabinet said that more than 90 percent of the Grand Egyptian Museum has been finalised with 49,603 artefacts moved to the museum.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to attract 5 million visitors annually and will be the largest museum in the world dedicated to one civilisation as reported by Traveler Conde Nast and Architectural Digest magazines.
The cabinet pointed out that 98 percent of the third phase of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation was completed, noting that it will be inaugurated early in 2020.
As many as 25 projects have been opened and 18 archaeological discoveries were announced in 2019, including the 3,000-year-old cache unearthed recently in Al-Asasif necropolis on the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor, which housed 30 intact and sealed coffins. This discovery ranks as one of the world's top scientific finds in 2019, according to Business Insider.
Among the discoveries was the noble Khoi' cemetery in Saqqara area which dates back to the late era of the Fifth Dynasty, the cabinet said, adding that it was ranked among the 10 best archaeological discoveries in 2019 by Archaeology magazine.
