Activists launch campaign to save Cairo book fair Activists and publishers are concerned that postponing the fair to February will impact the publishing industry
Independent activists from the Egyptian Coalition Movement (ECM), in cooperation with the EgyptianJournalists'Syndicate, have launched a campaign supporting the holding of the Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF) on its originally scheduled date in January. Activists called for a round table on Wednesday, 4 January, starting at 3:30pm at the syndicate. This comes as a reaction to the announcement of Minister of Culture Shaker Abdelhamid, about the postponement of the 43rd book fair to February due to security reasons, to avoid the event coinciding with the first anniversary of the January 25 revolution, during which time the ministry of interior will be busy securing other locations. The decision was met with deep concern among publishers whoargue it will lead to low attendance as many publishers across the Arab world will be committed to participating in Morocco's annual book fair in February. They fear the postponement will take the fair off the international agenda, with disastrous implications for Egypt's publishing industry. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/30761.aspx
