Six people were killed on Tuesday evening after an elevator in which they were riding collapsed at Banha University Hospital in Egypt's Qalyubia governorate. In statements to Al-Ahram Arabic news website, a hospital source said two other people were seriously injured in the collapse. Banha University head El-Sayed El-Qady said that among those killed were members of patients' families who were visiting the hospital. He added that the facility has 15 elevators, stressing that the collapsed elevator had undergone routine maintenance only two days prior to the incident. According to El-Qady, a committee has been established to investigate the reasons behind the collapse. Families of the deceased attempted to storm the hospital after receiving the news, but security forces were deployed and were able to regain control of the situation. The hospital's management board decided to suspend the operation of ten elevators in the surgery and internal medicine departments until an inspection is concluded to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. Eleven people have died in elevator-related accidents in Egypt since December 2017. Experts argue that accidents are mainly due to a lack of routine maintenance.
