QENA, Egypt: Three demonstrators protesting at the Nahda cement factory in Qena have announced they are to go on hunger strike after their demands were not met. Their demands include justice in the appointment of staff at the plant and not allowing whoever is in charge of employment to exploit their power by compelling workers to vote for their family members running in the elections. Protesters Mostafa Abdallah, Abdalla Ibrahim and Ahmed Hamdy went on hunger strike after a three day sit-in on the road leading to the company. The protesters decided this after several attempts by security forces and politicians to persuade the protesters to end the sit-in and negotiate with management failed. The company's management offered five permanent contracts to five of the demonstrators, while the rest will be offered contracts in February.
