CAIRO: Egyptian-American journalist Mona el-Tahawy was released from Egyptian police custody shortly after noon on Thursday. “I AM FREE,” she posted on her Twitter account at 12:29 on Thursday. “12 hours with Interior Ministry bastards and military intelligence combined. Can barely type - must go xray arms after CSF pigs beat me,” she added. El-Tahawy, a freelance journalist based in New York, tweeted at 3:44am Cairo time, “Beaten arrested in interior ministry.” After her release, el-Tahawy tweeted, “Thank God a political activist in MOI with me lent me his phone to tweet. Right after my tweet his battery died,” explaining her early-morning tweet. The post started a fervor on Twitter and other social networking sites, and the United States Department of State soon announced it was aware of the situation and in contact with Egyptian authorities. At 6:24am Cairo time, the U.S. Department of State posted on its official Twitter account, “Reports of @MonaEltahawy (Mona el-Tahawy) and @pangeaworld (Jehane Noujiam) detention very concerning. @USEMbassyCairo engaging authorities.” Noujiam is an Egyptian-American filmmaker who was arrested yesterday in Cairo. El-Tahawy has written for the Washington Post, the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, and other major papers. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces have left at least 35 dead and thousands injured since Saturday morning. RELATED STORIES: -
