CAIRO: Former member of the Freedom and Justice Party and Egyptian political activist Ahmed Douma yesterday began a hunger strike in solidarity with imprisoned activist Alaa Abdul Fatah. “I, Ahmed Douma, announce a hunger strike starting today Monday, November, 14 in objection to civilians being tried in military courts,” Douma wrote in a statement to the Egyptian Attorney General and the Egyptian Cabinet. “I also demand the release of activist Alaa Abdul Fatah.” Fatah is a blogger and a member of the January 25 Revolution coalition. He has been accused of inciting violence between Coptic Christians and the military forces during the Maspiro clashes last month. The Maspiro clashes left 27 demonstrators dead. Fatah was originally detained for 15 days at Torah Prison, but his detention has been extended pending trial and investigation.
