Egyptian Ministry of Electricity said that the ministry would issue two contracts for the largest wind farm in Egypt, with the potential to generate 200 megawatts of power. Hassan Younis said that the two contracts represent the second and the third stages of the project. The first share, signed in July, was for the supply and installation of the wind turbines. The project is made up 100 turbines, each with a two-megawatt capacity and a control system. The power station is scheduled to being operation in April 2014, according to Younis. The estimated cost of the project is 2.8 billion EGP (U.S. $469.8 million), to be financed by KfW Bankengruppe, the European Investment Bank, and the European Commission. Younis said that the project would protect the environment by producing electricity without carbon emissions.
