CAIRO: Egypt's ruling military council today canceled a controversial article in the country's new parliamentary election law, according to state news agency MENA. Article 5 states that any candidate who wishes to run in parliamentary elections as an independent must not belong to any political party. If a candidate elected to parliament were to join a party, the article allows for his or her membership in parliament to be withdrawn by a two-thirds majority vote. Elections for the People's Assembly, the lower house of parliament, are slated to begin November 28. Elections for the upper house, the Shura Council, are expected next spring. No time frame has been set for presidential elections. The November vote will be Egypt's first election since a popular uprising toppled the country's 30-year ruler and his regime eight months ago.
