The Egyptian Minister of Information Osama Heikal launched an initiative for national singing to express the spirit and objectives of the Egyptian January 25 Revolution. The minister held a meeting with a number of poets and composers in Maspiro on Tuesday. Heikal said Egyptian art did not express the revolution as notable national and historic event. He stressed the need for sophisticated art to contribute and achieve the objectives of the revolution and to create a state of national enthusiasm. The meeting was attended by a number of prominent poets, composers and leaders of the Egyptian Union of Television and Radio. The minister demanded the attendants to form a public committee aiming to draft an executive plan to execute the initiative. He also called to offer a new generation of singers, poets and composers inspired by the spirit of the January 25 Revolution. Heikal demanded the Egyptian regional sector of his ministry to adopt these new generations and provide them with the opportunity to appear on regional channels. On the other hand, the high-profile composer Helmy Bakr praised the initiative in this current critical stage, which witnesses a split between the political, liberal and social factions in the Egyptian society.
