Mido's Ajax Amsterdam missed out on the chance of moving second in Group G of the European Champions League after slumping to a 2-1 defeat away to French side Auxerre on Thursday. The hosts, who failed to gain any points in their first three games, went ahead as early as the ninth minute. Frederic Sammaritano scored with a deflected shot from the edge of the area after some slack marking. Toby Alderweireld brought Ajax level in the 79th minute after heading home a cross from the left but the Dutch giants eventually failed to get something from game. Substitute Steeven Langil gave Auxerre their first win six minutes from time after rounding off a quickly-taken free kick. Egyptian striker Mido was not included in Ajax's squad for the game due to illness. Ajax lie third in the group on four points, one behind second-placed AC Milan who played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with leaders Real Madrid (10). Spanish giants Real already qualified for the knockout phase with two games to spare, leaving Milan, Ajax and Auxerre to battle it out for the second ticket.
