Hamburg SV thrashed fourth division side Holstein Kiel 5-0 in the first round of the German DFB Pokal Cup as Egyptian striker Mohamed Zidan struck his first official goal for the Bundesliga side. Dutch playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart opened the scoring for Hamburg after 26 minutes, before Zidan doubled the lead nine minutes after the break. The third came through Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong in the 71st minute, Eric Choupo-Moting scored the fourth two minutes from time and new signing Romeo Castelen became the third Dutchman to be on target with a 90th minute goal. HSV expectedly reached the second round of the German Cup, which was won by Nurnberg last season.
