Egypt duo Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Elneny will not be playing in the Champions League knockouts after slipping to a 2-0 defeat to Schalke in the last group-stage day. A Julian Draxler strike and a highly-dubious goal from Joel Matip were enough to seal Basel's fate, sending the Swiss champions to the Europa League with a third-place finish. Basel were also unlucky to play nearly an hour with a man down after seeing center-half Ivan Ivanov dismissed for a last-man tackle in the first half. Forward Salah, whose goal against Chelsea kept Basel's hope of securing a last-16 berth alive, played the full match but struggled to provide the spark needed in the final third. Elneny also started but was substituted on the hour mark following the hosts' second-half goals. The result means that Chelsea, who beat Steaua Bucharest 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, and Schalke march through to the round of 16.
