An oil slick that has caused damage to tourist installations in the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada has been cleaned up, local officials said on Monday. They added that four-day efforts had managed to remove the oil spill that has prompted businesspeople in the famous Egyptian holidaymaking spot to complain to Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif. A committee from the ministries of the environment and petroleum is currently assessing the damage and determining the cause of the spill. "Nazif assigned Minister of Environment Maged George, Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmi and Red Sea Governor Magdi Qubeisi to visit the site of the leak and to make any necessary steps to clean up the oil spill," senior officials said on Saturday. They added that the Ministry was looking into the reasons for the leak and the compensation to be paid to the businessmen. "We have also contacted the Suez Canal Authority in order to provide information on the oil carriers, which passed the canal last Tuesday and Wednesday," said the Ministry of the Environment in a statement.
