Swedish princess' morganatic marriage
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 19 - 06 - 2010

STOCKHOLM - SWEDEN'S future queen, Crown Princess Victoria, wed her former personal trainer on Saturday in one of the largest public celebrations ever organised in Stockholm.
Crown Princess Victoria, 32, tied the knot with 36-year-old commoner Daniel Westling in an afternoon ceremony at the Stockholm Cathedral before a majestic procession through the streets of the capital, decked out in flowers and blue and yellow flags.
Some 1200 guests, including royals from around the world such as The ceremony and events were ''more important than all of those ever organised'' by the palace, said its information chief Nina Eldh. After the ceremony, the couple rode through the city centre in a carriage before navigating Stockholm's clear waters in the royal barge Victoria's parents, Queen Silvia and King Carl XVI Gustaf, used on their wedding day, 34 years ago to the day.
Princess Victoria, next-in-line to the Swedish throne, is often described as curious, down-to-earth and determined.
A recent example of her unassuming style was when she stopped to help a visitor attending a ceremony at the Royal Palace courtyard switch on her digital camera - and stopped to pose for a photo.
Victoria, is the oldest of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia's three children.
The birth of a younger brother, Carl Philip, two years after her own birth on July 14, 1977, meant she was not at the time entitled to be first-in-line to the throne.
But a 1980 parliamentary decree changed the order of succession to ensure the firstborn was heir, regardless of gender.
Victoria has won respect for speaking out about her struggle with dyslexia.
Her determination likely played a role in convincing the king that Daniel Westling was a suitable husband. He was not seen with the royals at public functions for several years. One of the first events was in 2006 when the king turned 60.
After finishing high school Victoria studied French at a university in France and later also studied history and international relations at Yale University.
The period in the US gave her some respite from the public limelight - and she was able to tackle an eating disorder.
The couple were engaged on February 24, 2009. Since then Westling, 36, has given up his interests in the fitness centres he operated and has said he will focus on supporting the princess in her role - as crown princess and when she in future becomes Sweden's third female monarch.
The monarch does not have formal powers and as head of state is meant to be a unifying symbol performing mainly ceremonial duties.
Victoria and Westling share an interest in the outdoors. Later this year they will move to the Haga Palace on the outskirts of Stockholm. The king spent his early years at the palace with his family.
After the wedding, Westling, will be known as "His Royal Highness, Prince Daniel" and counted as a member of the royal family. He will also be called the duke of Vastergotland - the same province of which Victoria is duchess.
Westling hails from the small community of Ockelbo, north of Stockholm. The inhabitants there have guarded the couple's privacy, offering them a safe haven from prying camera lenses when they have visited Westling's parents, Olle and Ewa.
After completing high school and military service, Westling took a youth recreation and sports leader programme before moving to Stockholm where he set up a fitness centre.
For the past six months he has been briefed about the palace and its organisation, along with Swedish history and political science.
