President Hosni Mubarak met on Saturday with US Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell and discussed lifting an Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip. Mitchell had arrived in Cairo Friday night for talks with senior officials as part of a current tour of the Middle East to revive stalled regional peace process. Mitchell briefed Mubarak on his talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials during his current trip. The Israeli government said on Thursday it would ease its relentless blockade of the Gaza Strip. The decision has been met with a Palestinian demand for the full removal of the siege imposed since the Islamist Hamas took over of the impoverished group around three years ago. Mubarak had ordered the opening of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza following Israel's fatal raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla late last year.
