GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany - Reinfried Herbst won the World Cup slalom title on Saturday to give Austria's men some consolation after a disappointing season. Herbst's ninth place in the final race of the season was enough to clinch the crown, edging out Frenchman Julien Lizeroux by a slender 22 points. Switzerland's Silvan Zurbriggen ended third. Lizeroux led the race at one stage, which would have given him the title, but eventually finished fourth after his time was bettered by the later skiers. Germany's Felix Neureuther won the race, his second victory of the season and career, while Manfred Pranger of Austria was second and Andre Myhrer of Sweden third. Meanwhile, Germany's Maria Riesch won the women's slalom World Cup title on Saturday after finishing third in the final race of the season. Marlies Schild of Austria won the race and Kathrin Zettel of Austria was second.
