CAIRO - The North Cairo Criminal Court has slated a verdict in the trial of former information minister Anas el-Fiqqi for September 28, judicial sources said. El-Fiqqi is charged with squandering $1.88 million of the Radio and Television Union's funds. Prosecution investigations revealed that the former minister illegally exempted Egyptian private satellite channels from fees to broadcast live football matches in the 2009-2010 season and in the early stages of the 2010-2011 season. The court listened to el-Fiqqi's defence, which said the Union does not have the right to determine the fees for direct broadcasting, which is a telecommunications service rather than a TV service.
