CAIRO - The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is running the affairs of the country, Saturday appointed General Tareq el-Mahdi, affiliated to the Army's Morale Affairs Department, as new General Supervisor of the State- run Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU). “Following the detention of former ERTU Chairman Osama el-Sheikh, the Council decided to appoint Tareq el-Mahdi,” the official Middle East News Agency reported Saturday. Earlier, Chief Prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered the 15-day detention of former Minister of Information Anas el-Feqi and Osama el-Sheikh for further interrogation on corruption charges. “El-Feqi and el-Sheikh are accused of profiteering, squandering and taking public funds,” the Prosecutor said. El-Mahdi, 61, was the commander of the Air Defence Force. He fought in the 1973 October 6 War with Israel.
