CAIRO - Nile water resources, co-operation between upstream and downstream countries of the Nile Basin and the political agenda of East Africa were focused in Cairo talks Sunday between President Hosni Mubarak and his Tanzanian counterpart Jakaya Kikwete. "Also discussed was the upcoming upcoming referendum on the separation of south Sudan and its anticipated consequences," the official Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported Sunday. Tanzania is one of five countries of the Nile upstream states that last May signed a controversial agreement that calling for the redistribution of the Nile's water resources. The new agreement, which is to reduce Egypt's annual share, was rejected by the two lower stream countries Egypt and Sudan. Both Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo have not yet signed the agreement. The Tanzanian President was given a red carpet reception at the presidential headquarters in Cairo where he held one-on-onetalks with Mubarak followed by a lunch for the two delegations.
