Egypt's Environment Minister highlights preparations for hosting COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh
Fouad stressed Egypt's keenness to involve everyone in climate change solutions
Published in Daily News Egypt on 27 - 10 - 2022

Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said that Egypt's preparations for hosting the UN climate conference COP27 include several axes, the first of which is the institutional and political aspect. So, Egypt ensured the participation of all parties and authorities, led by the Prime Minister in his capacity as the head of the National Council for Climate Change.
She stressed Egypt's keenness -even before preparing for the conference- to involve everyone in placing climate change considerations at the heart of the development process, to provide real experience in integrating climate into development sectors that can be replicated in different countries.
Fouad's remarks came at the session "Egypt the Future – Preparations for COP27" on Wednesday, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Egyptian-Emirati relations. The event was also attended by Hala Al-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN Secretary-General's envoy for climate, champion of climate action, as well as a number of Egyptian and Emirati ministers and public figures.
During her speech, the Minister of Environment indicated that the Egyptian presidency of the conference, as part of the technical preparation, was keen, when designing its substantive days, to discuss topics that touch on human needs, such as energy, water and agriculture, and how to implement through science, solutions and financing, and affected and influential groups such as youth, civil society and women.
Thie shall contribute to transforming the climate file from a technical topic to a file that touches on human needs, which will change the view of climate conferences, in addition to Egypt's keenness to establish constructive partnerships with various countries and institutions, the most important of which is the UAE, which will take over the flag at the next climate conference COP28.
With regard to Egypt's efforts in the field of climate finance and chairing a climate conference for implementation, the Minister of Environment explained that Egypt is consulting with all parties that pledged to provide and double adaptation funding, to ensure that even part of this funding is provided in light of the global economic crisis, and urging countries to update their national contribution plans to be able to receive this funding.
The minister also noted Egypt's keenness to be a pioneer and an example for countries to follow in this regard. She emphasized that coordination between the partners responsible for the presidency of the climate conferences to set goals to accelerate the pace of climate action will benefit the climate system at the international level.
