Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received a phone call from Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, on Monday evening to discuss aspects of bilateral cooperation and strengthen relations.
The conversation also dealt with discussing the continuation of joint coordination between Egypt and the European Union in light of the multiple and strong ties along with common interests and challenges that unite them, Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady said in a statement.
For her part, von der Leyen expressed the EU's appreciation for its strong and distinguished relations with Egypt, stressing the union's desire to continue to advance cooperation with Egypt at various levels given what Egypt represents as a centre of gravity for the region.
She also praised Al-Sisi's vision to achieve comprehensive development in the country, unremitting efforts to combat terrorism, and Egypt's successful experience in combating illegal immigration, according to Rady.
Rady added that the discussion touched on a number of issues and developments in the region, where Leyen confirmed the European side's interest in the ongoing coordination with Egypt on many significant international and regional issues and in Egypt's hosting of the United Nation's Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27) in November this year.
They both agreed on the need to continue consultation, exchange views, and intensify cooperation between the two sides — whether at the bilateral level or within the framework of international forums — with the aim of working to reach political settlements for the various crises in the region.
