Published in Daily News Egypt on 30 - 03 - 2014

The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research "Baseera" conducted a public opinion poll in late February on Egyptians participating in the upcoming presidential elections, including whether or not they will participate in the elections and their opinion regarding the best candidate for the Egyptian presidency.
Results show that 83% of Egyptians intend to participate in the upcoming presidential elections, while 12% said they have no intention of participating and 6% are not certain yet.
The results indicate that 81% of Egyptians in urban governorates intend to participate in the upcoming presidential elections, compared to 86% in Lower Egypt and 79% in Upper Egypt.
The percentage of those who do not intend to participate in the upcoming presidential elections rises from 7% in Lower Egypt to 14% in urban governorates and 16% in Upper Egypt.
The results highlight that the percentage of youth aged 30 years or less who do not intend to participate in the upcoming presidential elections is twice the percentage of those aged older than 30.
Eighteen percent of participants who are younger than 30 said they do not intend to participate in the elections, compared to 9% of participants aged 30-49 and those aged 50 and above.
However, the majority intend to participate in the upcoming presidential elections; 87% of Egyptians aged 50 or above, 85% aged 30-49 and 74% aged below 30 said they intend to vote in the elections.
When participants were asked who they would vote for if the presidential elections were to be held tomorrow, 45% of them said they have not decided, while 51% said they will vote for Field Marshal Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, Egypt's defence minister, and 1% said they would vote for Hamdeen Sabahy. The remaining rates were distributed among the rest of candidate.
Poll Methodology
This poll was conducted using both mobile and landline phones on a probability sample of 2,062 citizens aged 18 or above. It covered all of the nation's governorates. All interviews took place between 27 February and 4 March 2014.
The response rate was approximately 61% and the margin of error in the results was less than 3%. The estimate of economic level was based on the ownership of durable goods.
